— A 38-year-old man, seeming distracted, walked into the path of an oncoming freight train Saturday night and died instantly, authorities said.
“He appeared to be surprised just before impact,” said Dani Moschella, Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.
Police are not releasing the man’s identity until his family is notified.
The accident happened at Northeast 48th Street and North Dixie Highway.
The Florida East Coast cargo train was traveling northbound at the time.
“The gates were down. The lights were flashing. The train engineer was beeping his horn,” Moschella said.
But for some reason, the man, who was alone, appeared not to notice the warnings. He walked around the gate and onto the tracks.
“We don’t know why,” Moschella said.
An investigation is ongoing.
