Pfizer to recall cholesterol drug Lipitor again

USA Today, December 23, 2010

Pfizer will recall about 19,000 bottles of Lipitor 40 mg tablets distributed in the U.S. due to a customer report of a strange odor coming from the bottles.

Forty-milligram tablets of the drug Lipitor, made by Pfizer.CAPTIONAPThe health risk to patients who use the medicine “appears to be minimal”, the company said.

This is the fourth recall of the drug, which is generally used to treat high cholesterol. Pfizer recalled Lipitor in August, October and November after similar complaints.

Pfizer attributes the odor to a chemical used as a wood preservative often applied to the pallets used to transport many consumer goods. Pfizer prohibits the use of the chemically treated wood to ship its products, the company said in a press release.

Patients who smell a strange odor in their Lipitor bottle should return it to their pharmacist, Pfizer said.
