Miami Beach police say a tourist staying at a posh Miami Beach resort snuck into a woman’s hotel room early Thursday morning and sexually assaulted her while she slept.
Investigators arrested Rafael Munguia, 26, Thursday evening.
Detective Vivian Hernandez, a police spokeswoman, said Munguia confessed to entering a room on the 15th floor of the Fontainebleau Miami Beach through a “slightly ajar” door and raping a sleeping woman after returning to the hotel by taxi around 3 a.m.
Hernandez said the woman, who was in Miami Beach to attend the Winter Music Conference and staying in a room next door to her sister, woke up during the attack and tried to fight Munguia off. He ran when she screamed for help, Hernandez said.
Police received a call about the alleged sexual assault about 7 a.m.
Hernandez said Munguia was visiting South Florida from Mexico and staying at the hotel on the 8th floor. He did not know the victim, she said.
A Fontainebleau spokeswoman issued a statement Thursday, calling the incident “isolated.”
