Four Workers Sent to Hospital After Scaffold Collapses
Four workers were injured when a scaffolding collapsed along the New River below I-95 in Fort Lauderdale on Monday afternoon, February 10. The men were cleaning and inspecting bridges when the accident sent one worker plummeting to the ground and the other three dangling in the air. The fallen worker landed in a pile of broken scaffolding and was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center. Two workers were rescued by the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Squad. The fourth, who was strapped into his safety harness and later said the whole ordeal was “scary,” remained suspended for more than 90 minutes before rescue. A member of the Fire Technical Rescue Team repelled down from a catwalk and was able to switch the worker into another harness. All four men are expected to recover. The workers had been cleaning and inspecting the bridges for about four months when the scaffolding suddenly gave way. The cause is unknown at present, but several investigations are expected, including one by OSHA.Whether you work on a scaffold high above a river or you sit behind a desk in a crowded office, accidents happen.
