Car Seat Saves Toddler’s Life in Scary DUI Crash


A car seat saved an 18-month-old boy’s life when the car he was riding in was hit by a drunk driver, according to a fire rescue spokesman. The accident happened near the border of Cooper City and Pembroke Pines and involved a Ford truck and a car carrying five people, including the 18-month-old boy and an 11-year-old girl.The 28-year-old driver of the Ford F-250 was driving over 70 mph in a 45 mph area. He rammed his truck into the back of the car, forcing the back seat into the front seat. Five people in the car received injuries, but none were life-threatening. A spokesman for Broward Sherriff Fire Rescue credits the car seat the toddler was riding in for saving his life. He stated that most children’s car seats are incorrectly installed. Broward Sherriff Fire Rescue conducts free car seat and installation checks.After hitting the car, the Ford truck crashed through a fence and into the backyard of a house. There did not appear to be any damage to the house. The driver was charged with DUI and reckless driving. He was also charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell.A third vehicle was involved in the crash and suffered minor damage. The injured people were taken to hospitals by fire and rescue personnel.

The fire rescue spokesman said that the crash could have been far more tragic if there had been pedestrians in the path of the truck or in the backyard that it careened into.
