Child dies after being hit by van in Pompano Beach

Broward Sheriff’s Office received a call at 10:40 a.m. Sunday about a child that had been struck by a van in front of The Forum Hotel in Pompano Beach, at 600 SW 3rd Street, according to a press release.

The driver of a 1995 GMC van, Abaner Penetus, 50, was heading northbound in front of the hotel when the child went into the path of the van and was struck, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue first transported Deshae Gordon, 3, to Holy Cross Hospital. He was then transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he died, the release said.

The child was leaving the Forum Hotel to go back to Gainesville where he lived after a family vacation with his grandmother, aunts and cousins, said his great-aunt Yvette Latson.

“We thought we had all kids across the street, and then we heard a lady scream,” Latson said. “We didn’t even know he got hit.”
