At least 7 injured multi-vehicle Turnpike crash

At least seven people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash that temporarily closedsouthbound traffic on the Florida Turnpike this afternoon in suburban Lake Worth, authorities said.

The crash occurred at around 4 p.m. at mile marker 90, located south of Lake Worth Road. The incident shut down all southbound lanes near the crash scene for about an hour.

One woman was transported with serious injuries after she was struck by another vehicle when she exited her vehicle.

A BMW and a Ford were involved in a crash, said Lt. Tim Frith, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol. The woman driving the BMW got out of her car and was hit by a passing vehicle, Frith said.

The woman and the driver of the Ford were both transported to the Delray Medical Center with serious injuries, said.

A supervisor for FHP said that a total of four vehicles were involved in the incident. She did not say what caused the crashes, but noted that they occurred during a period of heavy rainfall.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Don DeLucia said that a total of seven people, including one trauma alert, were transported to area hospitals.

An update on their conditions was not available this evening.
